Newborn Screening does save lives by Tiffany Hsieh, Mar 20, 2008 (8:26pm)

Newborn screening allows for early identification and treatment of unapparent but serious conditions. This bill would give grants for increased education about newborn conditions as well as for newborn screening. It would help create national standards for screening programs.

The newborn medical testing covered in this bill will most likely lead to lower infant mortality rates, especially from preventable and treatable conditions. But, another important aspect to note is the potential for storing the newborns DNA and creating a ‘database’ without explicit consent.
