Farm Animal Stewardship Purchasing Act by Lynn Fang, Jul 2, 2008 (8:06pm)
This bill stipulates the U.S. government to only purchase animal products from farmers who follow basic animal welfare practices. It requires (1) adequate shelter with room to move and extend the limbs and turn around; (2) proper food and nourishment, no starvation or force-feeding; and (3)
proper veterinary care. This is a modest step towards better treatment for animals, but it allows the government to lead by example, rather than hamper the industry with more regulatory requirements. It is a cost-effective bill, as it does not require an expensive agency enforcement, and also promotes healthier food for those who enjoy the consumption of animal products. Sick or injured animals have a greater likelihood of transmitting fatal diseases, such as mad cow disease, to humans. If this act is passed, it would improve the lives of millions of animals.
