MapLight is partnering with the City and County of Denver, Colorado, to build a new campaign finance system to advance government transparency and replace the city’s existing, outdated system. The replacement system will be uniquely designed to administer Denver’s campaign finance regulations while providing in-depth search functions for the public and promoting an accountable, transparent government.
The new campaign finance system will launch in 2022 and will include significant upgrades for campaign users, employees, and Denver residents. While the application will have standard reporting functions for campaigns, it will also have a dashboard that better displays campaign spending information to website visitors and the media. Additionally, the application will integrate with the City’s Geographic Information System and cashiering systems to eliminate manual processes that office employees currently use to track independent expenditures, fines, and qualifying contributions.
The new partnership builds upon MapLight’s previous successful civic technology projects, including work with the California Secretary of State to build open source tools that help Californians see the money behind their elections — such as Power Search and the Quick Guide to Propositions — as well as Voter’s Edge California, a comprehensive guide to California elections in partnership with the League of Women Voters of California Education Fund that serves two million visitors each election year.
